Another day dawns and brings with it further news of the seemingly endless Toyota recall incident. A report has hit the internet which shows an internal email sent by a Toyota executive speaking about the need for those in the company to temper their statements made about the incident. In the email, which was written in 2010, this executive wrote that statements had been made by those at Toyota which weren’t necessarily untruthful but that seemed to be made because of their appeal to the public.
The incident in question, for those that are unaware, began due to the tendency of some Toyota vehicles to accelerate without input from their driver. This unintended acceleration resulted in a recall of 8 million vehicles and nearly $50 million in fines from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
This isn’t the first time an email from a Toyota executive made waves. The company’s vice president of environment and public affairs had earlier drafted a memo which came down on Toyota for not responding quickly enough to the unintended acceleration issue. This memo, which months later was made public, was issued five days before Toyota issued a pedal recall that affected 2.9 million vehicles.
