Nice of Joe to respond to you so thoroughly. There is also the issue with age... but I must say that separating seasons into "good" and "bad" portions to make any kind of point (other than the correct one that the Royals should have sent him down in 2007 when he was struggling) is just bad analysis, since it's based on arbritrary splits.

Moreover -- defense and position are part of a players value. I hardly see how that counts against Gordon, other than the (correct) point about bats developing.

As far as defense goes, Gordon is above average in UZR for his career. Taking one bad season of defensive stats and scouting reports against prior good ones as being any more telling is almost as bad as taking less than 115 PAs this season as saying something significant about Gordon's talent one way or the other.

And we also haven't talked at all about baserunning -- Gordon is very good on the bases according to EqBRR, Butler is... not.

Sorry to have this conversation on your blog, and it's good of Poz to take time out to respond to you. I guess I'm giving away too much of my year-end column now.

One more thing -- would it really be all that surprising if Gordon was feeling really crappy given how this year has gone for him in terms of getting hurt at the very beginning of the season then not performing well and getting sent down, coincidentally just in time to mess with his service time clock? I'd wager those circumstances would be difficult for a lot of people. It's a bit harder to be in a good mood in that situation than when you're marginal, internet celebrity submariner who is an just happy to be in AAA.

It's a guy dealing with some crappy luck on top of his crappy performance. Bad body language would be understandable -- he's had a crappy season. And he's screwed anyway. If he was in Omaha and seemed happy and content, people would be talking about how "he can't take the major league pressure" and how he should be "fighting harder to get his job back."

Maybe I'm special pleading here. But I don't think so. I wish he wouldn't gripe about pitches, either. He's probably not going to be the superstar we all hope(d) he would be.
