Your bromeliad will be happiest and you will appreciate it most when it is neat, tidy, and well groomed. As needed, clean dust and spots off upper surface of smooth-leaved plants. While cleaning, support the leaves with your hand to prevent bending or cracking. Rub gently with water and a soft cloth. A drop of detergent in the water will remove most stubborn spots. Leaf polish brightens soft leaf-type bromeliads such as neoregelias and nidulariums. Do not rub or polish scale covered bromeliads. Just rinse them in warm water.
Strip off dead and yellow leaves. Old ones pull off easily. Stubborn ones are readily removed by splitting them down the middle lengthwise and then pulling sideways. If many leaves must be removed cut them off close to the stem with scissors. Trim discolored leaf tips, being sure you trim them in the same shape as the leaf tip.
Also remove dead blossoms and stalks when dried. Remove debris between leaves with a soft brush and flush and replace water in cups occasionally.
Finish grooming by cleaning the pot and adding some potting mix if needed. Pot covers will hide disreputable pots.
